A few weeks back I reviewed #21042-1: Statue of Liberty which was released back in 2018.

I was so impressed that I picked up #21046-1: Empire State Building. It has been developed for all with an interest in travel, architectural culture, history and design.

  • LEGO™ Architecture interpretation of the real-world New York landmark, the Empire State Building.
  • This 360°-displayable model features 4 highly detailed facades, a silver-colored antenna tower and a tiled baseplate depicting Fifth Avenue and the surrounding roads, complete with 6 yellow cabs.
  • At 21” (55cm) high, this Empire State Building model is the tallest LEGO™ Architecture model to date (July 2019).
  • The included booklet contains information about the designer, architecture and history of the structure, as well as historical facts about the Empire State Building and its architectural heritage.

The Empire State Building has been a popular build out of LEGO bricks. It’s package dimensions are 19.00 cm width, 35.50 cm height and 11.50 cm depth. You may want to open the gallery with the 4 images. If you decide to sell it completely and sealed, you get approximately € 118,19. I have that set, but it is back in a storage container somewhere in the US so I won’t spend a lot of time talking about it other than mentioning that #21042-1 is being released 10 years later.

This set was released on 2 August 2019 in the US. It retails for $129.99 in the US and with 1,767 pieces it works out to $0.074/piece. It was released in 2019 and removed in 2021. Related Tags: New York; Art Deco; USA; Nameplate; Microscale; Car; Taxi; Pedestrian Crossing; Skyscraper

My daughter who helped me build my custom model of the Empire State Building also happened to build the most recent official version (set 21046).

It is amazing how accurate the designers of this set managed to make it at such a (relatively) small scale. The price per brick is € 0,06. The piece count of just the outer shell was starting to push 10000 pieces and I hadn’t even worked on the inner core. The height of the structure was increased in 1950 with the addition of the iconic antenna tower.

The LEGO®-Set “21046: LEGO® Empire State Building” contains of 1767 pieces and weighs 1394 grams. A quick search just on YouTube shows numerous fan built models at much larger scales then this set. At 21” (55cm), the tallest LEGO Architecture model to date (July 2019), this highly detailed, collectible replica accurately recreates the symmetrical lines of the building’s 4 curtain wall facades and art deco antenna tower.

I am happy to report that the new set (21046) leaves the previous two versions in the dust. The front shows the set while the back shows the set next to a picture of the real building. Construction of the building began on March 17, 1930 and just one year and 45 days later, on May 1, 1931 it was opened for business. The official price in Europe is € 99,99.

I found it locally for around $85 so be on the lookout for discounts.

Back in 2009, LEGO released #21002-1: Empire State Building (Brickset link). This used the 1×2 grille tiles to add a little more detail but the scale was about the same as what was used on the original set.
