If You Choose Gnomish

Can you learn both Gnomish and Goblin Engineering?

No, you can’t have both at the same time.

World drop from mobs level 48-60 or raid bosses (e.g., Nefarian in Blackwing Lair). But there’s a trick to get the benefits of both.

Here’s what I usually do:

1.

The following two specializations are available:

  • Goblin Engineering
  • Gnomish Engineering

Your chosen specialization allows you to craft unique items that are not available to players with the other specialization. While trainers in Ironforge (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde) teach core recipes, rare schematics—obtained through world drops, vendors, quests, or bosses—are the heart of Engineering.

Fortunately, most recipes that are crafted by one Specialization can be worn by both.

For information on how to choose a specialization, please see my separate guide:

Guide to Engineering Specializations

  • 200 - 215
20 x Unstable Trigger - 20 Mithril Bar, 20 Mageweave Cloth, 20 Solid Blasting Powder

    Save these.

  • 238 - 250
    20 x Hi-Explosive Bomb - 40 Mithril Casings, 20 Unstable Trigger, 40 Solid Blasting Powder
  • 260 - 285
    35 x Thorium Widget - 105 Thorium Bar, 35 Runecloth

The recipe is sold by Gearcutter Cogspinner in Ironforge and by Sovik in Orgrimmar.

It will be yellow for the last few points, so you might not reach 285.

Removed in patch 5.0.4; now from trainers.

World drop from mobs level 15-30.

Notes

Head: +2 Intellect, +4 Versatility.

Some items require a specific specialization to use, while other items are crafted by one specialization but are usable by any engineer. Bind on Pickup (BoP) items

Only one spec can craft these, but you can still use them even after switching specs.

You will need the 60 Rough Blasting Powder later, so keep these.

Journeyman Engineering (75 - 135)

You can only train Engineering past 75 if you learn Journeyman Engineering.
