"Viktor has so many qualities.

His commitment to forcing the move reportedly led to a delay in reporting to pre-season training at Sporting, prompting disciplinary action from club president Frederico Varandas, who insisted: “No one is above the interests of the club.”

Despite the tension, Arsenal are confident the deal will be completed in time for Gyokeres to join the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia, beginning with a clash against AC Milan on July 23.

The Swedish international will become Arsenal’s fifth major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Martin Zubimendi (£51m from Real Sociedad), Christian Norgaard (£15m from Brentford), Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m from Chelsea), Noni Madueke (£52m from Chelsea) and Cristhian Mosquera (£15m from Valencia).

Arsenal have finally addressed their forward line dilemma with the acquisition of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of £55 million.

The 27 year old Swedish striker, who propelled Sporting to league glory last term with an impressive tally of 39 goals and bagged a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.

With potential performance-related bonuses, Gyokeres' move could cost the Gunners up to £64 million, pushing their summer expenditure to around £200 million.

That will be good news for Coventry City, who sold Gyokeres to Sporting and are now due a cut of the profit after agreeing a sell-on clause.

Gyokeres is Mikel Arteta's sixth signing of the summer window, joining the ranks alongside defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13 million), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60 million), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5 million), midfielder Christian Norgaard (£10 million), and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5 million).

Arsenal announced the signing with a succinct message on X stating: "This is where you need to be.

Viktor Gyokeres is a Gunner."

Gyokeres is set to join his new Arsenal colleagues during their pre-season tour in Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Gunners are scheduled to play Newcastle at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday before wrapping up their tour with a match against Tottenham in Hong Kong on July 31.

Previously, Gyokeres moved to Brighton from Swedish club Brommapojkarna in January 2018 and had loan spells at St Pauli, Swansea, and Coventry, before sealing a permanent transfer to Coventry City in July 2021.

Following Coventry's penalty shootout defeat to Luton in the 2023 Sky Bet Championship final at Wembley, Gyokeres made a £20.5m move to Sporting.

We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal."

What should City spend the Gyokeres windfall on?

Coventry and two other clubs to receive windfall from Viktor Gyokeres transfer

Coventry City and two other clubs are in line to receive a combined payment of around £3.76 million (€4.35m) from Viktor Gyokeres’ proposed transfer to Arsenal, thanks to sell-on clauses and solidarity contributions stemming from the striker’s earlier moves.

Arsenal are now on the verge of finalising a high-profile transfer for Sporting CP’s prolific Swedish striker, with Sky Sports News journalist Mark McAdam reporting that the Gunners have reached an agreement on a £55 million fixed fee with the Portuguese champions.

Performance-related add-ons currently under discussion could raise the total value of the deal to £63.5 million (€73.5m).

McAdam provided the latest update on The Transfer Show, stating: “Arsenal are close to an agreement with Sporting over Viktor Gyokeres. He netted an impressive 97 goals in 102 matches for the Portuguese team.

Arsenal found themselves without a recognised striker in the closing months of last season due to long-term injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Even prior to this, Arsenal were in dire need of a dependable goal scorer, and Arteta will be hoping his new signing can help him secure his first piece of silverware since winning the FA Cup in 2020, and end the club's twenty-year wait for a Premier League title.

Arsenal's new sporting director, Andrea Berta, has quickly set about bolstering a squad that has finished second in the league for the past three seasons.

Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also signed new contracts in the off-season, with a long-term extension for young talent Ethan Nwaneri believed to be nearly finalised.

Arteta said: "We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club.

We understand they’ve agreed the fixed fee, which is £55m. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels.

"He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.

"We’re excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him.

His explosive pace, physical dominance, and clinical finishing have made him Arsenal’s top striker target this summer.

The Athletic has praised Gyokeres’ “freakish power” and ability to exploit space in behind, making him a natural fit for Mikel Arteta’s system, which has lacked a true No. 9 since the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Coventry City no longer have a Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting CP sell-on clause in big Sky Blues blow

Coventry City will not receive anything from a Viktor Gyokeres sale this summer, despite agreeing a sell-on clause when selling him in 2023.

The Championship side sold the Sweden international in a deal that could have potentially risen to €26m, with a sell-on clause attached.

Tongues were therefore wagging when the striker bagged 54 goals in all competitions last term, catching the eye of the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

But now, in a bombshell reveal, talkSPORT have confirmed Coventry will receive nothing, regardless of what happens with Gyokeres this summer.

Coventry City were in line for fresh Viktor Gyokeres profit

Having bought the striker for just £1m from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021, the Sky Blues were already well in profit from the original fee agreed with Sporting two years ago.

But, cleverly, they inserted a sell-on clause in case, as he did, Gyokeres progressed even more and increased in value.

The amount they were due first stood at 15 per cent of any profit the Portuguese side made.

However, Sporting retained an option to pay an additional €1m to reduce Coventry’s cut to 10 per cent, which they did.

With Sporting’s club president, Frederico Varandas, talking about fees in excess of €70m for the striker, it was still set to be a handsome payday.

But those hopes have now been dashed.

Why Coventry City won’t receive anything from Viktor Gyokeres sell-on clause

It has now been reported by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook that Coventry actually sold the whole sell-on clause at the beginning of last season to fund transfers that summer.

Crook stopped short of revealing how much the Sky Blues received to waive those rights.

The Championship club reportedly spent £18m last summer, presumably with some of the additional funds raised from Gyokeres’ sell-on clause sale, which funded the likes of Jack Rudoni and Matt Grimes.

Coventry fans have spent the start of this summer dreaming of where they might be able to invest any extra Gyokeres funds, but this news may mean it’s now back to the drawing board.

Coventry City still did well out of Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting CP deal

This fresh update does not materially impact how good a transfer Gyokeres was for Coventry.

He netted 41 Championship goals for the club over two seasons, before turning an incredible profit in the space of just two years.

However, in the short term, this will still be painful news for those connected to Coventry, who were hoping to have an additional windfall this summer to reinvest after Frank Lampard’s strong end to the season.

It will put a dampener on those thoughts for Coventry fans, but in time, they will still appreciate how well their Gyokeres deal worked out.

one of the reasons why this deal has moved a step closer is because the agent has agreed to waive a chunk of his fee.”

A significant breakthrough came as Gyokeres’ agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, agreed to forgo a substantial portion of his commission, often around 10% accelerating the process.

As part of the deal structure, Coventry City who sold Gyokeres to Sporting for approximately £20 million in 2023 will receive between 10–15% of the profit Sporting make on the sale.

The add-ons are now being discussed. Based on the £55 million fee, Coventry’s windfall is estimated at nearly £3.76 million, with Brighton & Hove Albion and Swedish fourth-tier side IFK Aspudden-Tellus also due minor solidarity payments, according to Football365.

Gyokeres, 27, has been in sensational form since his move to Lisbon, scoring 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting, including an eye-catching 54 goals in 52 games last season, and a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.
