He amassed 684 goals and 773 assists for 1,457 points across 1,451 games.

Selänne was instrumental in the Ducks’ 2007 Stanley Cup championship and represented Finland in six Olympic Games, winning four medals. If I could just sleep through that season, I would.

2002–03

San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks was an early Stanley Cup favorite, and Teemu was bursting with excitement, but the season turned into a major disappointment … The Sharks missed the playoffs … Team Finland lost the World Championship QF 6-5 to Sweden on home ice, having led the game with 5-1 … Teemu scored a hat-trick in the game … Signed for one year with the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent.

That was a disaster of epic proportions, and the biggest nightmare of my career.

With one more, Selanne will separate himself from Esposito and take sole possession of 3rd place, but is Brett Hull’s 265 mark within reach?

All-Time Power Play Goals

[table id=82 /]

With the shortened season, realistic expectations assume Selanne could score somewhere in the area of 6-8 power play goals, depending on health and the effectiveness of the Ducks power play.

He holds numerous team scoring records for both the Winnipeg/Arizona franchise and the Anaheim Ducks. In 2010-11, he had 16 of them in 73 games. He played 21 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Winnipeg Jets, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. In a shortened season, Selanne will be hard-pressed to repeat these totals, but it still feels somehow wrong to call Shanahan’s 109 game-winners out of reach.

Teemu Selänne’s legacy is one of class, consistency, and unforgettable moments.

Selanne's Awards and Records

  • Calder Memorial Trophy (1993 – NHL Rookie of the Year)
  • Stanley Cup Champion (2007 – Anaheim Ducks)
  • King Clancy Memorial Trophy (2015 – Leadership & Humanitarian Contribution)
  • Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (2006 – Perseverance and Dedication to Hockey)
  • Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee (2017, first ballot)

NHL Records

  • NHL First All-Star Team (1993, 1997, 1998)
  • NHL All-Star Game Appearances (10 times)
  • Most goals by a rookie in a single season: 76 (1992–93)
  • Most points by a rookie in a single season: 132 (1992–93)
  • Oldest player to score 50+ points in a season (age 41)
  • One of only 21 players to score over 600 career goals
  • Second-most career goals by a European-born player (behind Jaromir Jagr)
  • Ranks 12th in all-time NHL goals scored
  • Ranks 15th in all-time points scored
I remember exactly when it happened, 56 seconds into the OT.

I missed hockey so much, and learned to appreciate the times I could play injury-free. Not bad, eh?

Collecting the 57 points necessary  to catch Stan Mikita at 14th  is a reach in a 48 game season and then the gaps begin to get even larger, so it appears as though Selanne will be settling in at 15th, at least for now.

Whether 2013 is Teemu Selanne’s curtain call remains to be seen, but watching his ascension through some of the most esteemed records in the history of hockey will undoubtedly be one of the greatest stories to come from the 2013 season.

Teemu Ilmari Selänne (born July 3, 1970) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey winger.

In 2017 Selänne was named one of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ in history. On June 26, 2017, Selänne was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as the second Finn after Jari Kurri.

Selänne was a first-round selection of the Jets, tenth overall, at the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, but initially remained in Finland. I lived in the now.

2010–11

Anaheim Ducks

Decided to keep on playing … Finished in the top 10 in NHL scoring for the first time in 11 years, since 2000 … Was named the Ducks alternate captain after five years without wearing a letter … Anaheim lost to the Nashville Predators in the first round … Teemu scored six goals in the six games of the series.

I’m against violence, and have always been, but defending yourself on the ice is a part of playing in the NHL.

2009–10

Anaheim Ducks

Team Finland’s superduo Teemu Selänne – Saku Koivu joined forces in the NHL when the Montreal Canadiens captain signed with the Ducks … Teemu suffered three injuries that kept him to 54 games … Scored 48 points (27G, 21A) in 54 regular season games … Anaheim missed the playoffs … Won bronze in his fifth Olympic tournament in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

This is definitely my last season as a player, and my last chance to win something big with team Finland.

Nicknamed “the Finnish Flash“, Selänne is the highest scoring Finn in NHL history, and one of the highest overall; he retired in 2014 11th all-time with 684 goals and 15th with 1,457 points. The only thing standing in his way? I’ll never forget the looks on their faces.

1994–95

Winnipeg Jets

Teemu started the season in a Jokerit jersey due to an NHL lockout … finished season with the Jets … wanted to play in the World Championships, but head coach Curt Lindström chose not to pick him and Finland won its first World Championship gold … Participated in the Rally Finland race for the first time.

I played in Winnipeg but grew a Jokerit playoff beard.

– Teemu

1993–94

Winnipeg Jets

Teemu kicked his second NHL season off with a hat trick in a game against Washington … suffered a season-ending injury on January 26 when he tore his Achilles tendon in a game against Anaheim … Joined a Finnish TV broadcast team during the World Championships in Milan, Italy.

Reporters were asking me if I could score 200 goals in my second season.

– Teemu

1992–93

Winnipeg Jets

Teemu led the NHL in scoring in his rookie season and broke the rookie goal and points records … won the Calder Trophy as the rookie of the year … voted into the First All-Star Team … Goal celebration after his record-breaking 54th goal of the season is an iconic moment.

When the snowball started rolling, there was no stopping it.

– Teemu

1991–92

Jokerit

Won Finnish championship … Finland third in Canada Cup … Played in his first Olympics in Albertville, France … SM-liiga leading goal scorer, First All-Star team, Best Forward … Led league in play off scoring and goal scoring … Declined invitation to the World Championships due to fatigue.

We dug out of a deep hole, from the brink of bankruptcy, and won the league.

This puts him easily ahead of Esposito, but still short of Brett Hull on the list. An Olympic gold medal would be a great crown to my career.

– Teemu

2008–09

Anaheim Ducks

Surprised everybody by signing a two-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks … No pondering the next summer … Ducks ousted from the playoffs in the second round, after losing Game 7 to the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 … Teemu scored one and added an assist in the game.

I loved to play so there was no reason for me to retire.

– Teemu

2007–08

Anaheim Ducks

Wasn’t sure if he wanted to return to the NHL … Made his comeback on February 5, 2008, against the New York Islanders … The Ducks visited the White House and met President George W.

Bush during that same road trip … Lost to the Dallas Stars in the first round of playoffs … Voted Finland’s best player for the eighth time … Daughter Veera was born.

I was convinced I was done. The injury made me reprioritize my life.

– Teemu

1988–89

Jokerit

Became the Winnipeg Jets first-round draft choice, 10th overall in 1988, as the first Finn to be drafted in the first round … Attended the Jets training camp in September … His first season as a pro, with Jokerit in the second-tier league in Finland … completed military service in the army’s Sports Regiment … Played first games with Team Finland … World Juniors in Alaska … Leading scorer of relegation round as Jokerit got promoted to SM-liiga … last player to get cut from Finland’s World Championship team.

We earned promotion to Finnish top league, and Jokerit’s Cinderella story was under way.
